Introduction

Standard Format for each of the 10 edited Volumes of "Biblia Americana"

Introduction: Volume 1 will contain a General Introduction to the entire manuscript of "Biblia Americana," including an analysis of its significance, the nature of Mather's scholarship, the hermeneutical debates, growth process, and Mather's "new" place in early American scholarship. Moreover, the first volume will contain the Statement of Editorial Principles, Guidelines governing Annotations, and an Index to vol. 1. Each of the subsequent volumes will contain a separate introduction (no more than c. 50 pp. in print) describing Mather's contributions to the contemporaneous debate as evidenced in his commentary contained in this volume. Each volume will contain brief annotations and an index.

Annotations: Mather's voluminous citations and references to primary and secondary sources require skilled editors who can balance brief, informative annotations (in footnotes) with references to discussions in primary and secondary works. Annotations will include context, complete names, dates, and titles of authors and works, translations of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew citations, and references to Mather's published works.

Index: Each of the 10 (planned) volumes will have its own separate Index. The last volume will contain a Comprehensive Index.

Online Edition of "Biblia Americana":

After all edited volumes have appeared in print, we are planning to make available to subscribers the textual edition and the holograph manuscript in a fully searchable Online, CD-rom, or DVD-rom version along the lines of the "Sample" on our website.
